DAR UL DAWAH- Ustadh Suhaib June 5, 2007 notes continued

Look at Imam Malik rahimahullah- he’s born 94 after hijri. Close to the early generations! When asked to write a small treatise about the fiqh of clothing, he looked at 60 different types of clothing in the market of Madinah and THEN wrote the book. Why? To understand his environment. To KNOW the people!

 

 

The contentions

1-      many people will expound that the world is divided into 2:

a.       the land of Islam

b.      the land of war [harb]

                                                              i.      first of all, harb does not mean war. It means to steal. Because when war is committed, lives and property are stolen.

1.      look at the beauty of Arabic language.

                                                            ii.      this concept was, waAllahu ‘alam, not mentioned by the first 3 generations.

c.       there is no interest practiced between people of Islam and … this is hadeeth is weak.

                                                              i.      It cannot be used for proof because it’s hadith mursal. Outside of this weak hadith, we don’t have this term. If this was sahih, we should have seen Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu dividing his state into dar ul Islam and dar ul Harb, until the time of the fitnah and we ask Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala to protect us.

d.      this word needs to be traced…

                                                              i.      Haroon ar Rasheed rahimahullah lived at a time of warfare. It was not a stable state.

                                                            ii.      He asked Muhammad Shaybani, student of Abu Hanifah rahimahullah to provide for him an understanding of the geo-political reality of the Muslim state

                                                          iii.      He answered: o leader of the believers! This land of ours is the land of Islam, their land is the land of war.

1.      is this fiqh or shariah? FIQH! So we can differ!

  What we find: The earth was made for me as a masjid and proof— aw kama gal Sal Allahu alayhi wa sallma Therefore the ulema after him sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam divided the world into 2 categoreis:  What people want: want to go to the drive through and take it, and you have to because you are busy. At the same time, you have the responsibility to make sure that your understanding agrees with the Qur’an and Sunnah  

We need a balanced individual

Verse 143 in surah al Baqarah—in the middle of the SURAH! Is the verse that ALLAH subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “Thus We have made you a just nation…”

  What it should really be Dar ul DAWAH

And the lands in which the dawah has been responded to.

The main job of the Muslim is to kill people? To be hard on people and rude?

 The main job of the MUSLIM is to portray the shariah of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala through their actions so that the people around them will feel the LIGHT emanating from this person 

When they see this… then which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?

Then when the da’wah comes from the mouth, it’s easy for people to accept and listen to.

People are yearning for authenticity!

  

Even the highest authority is not held to any type of fidelity and principles.

   Meaning is manifest through gadgets and tools, money back guarantees…so now the eman is REMOVED from ALLAH ‘Azza wa Jal and the qutwa? Taken from humanity and put into technology As a western convert, don’t reject who you are! You are the son of the west! But if you fall into acts of violence, you will bring more harm to this community! 

O he went to Azhar and sold out now.

FEAR ALLAH AKHI! Wallahi I’m trying to speak to you from my heart

When you say dar ul harb, it has some contentions:

  1. if someone lives in dar ul harb and they feel he has no rights upon them, he suspends the rights on himself from others. If you wanna be real with it akhi, you suspend your rights by this understanding legally
  2. the definition of dar ul Islam changed over time
    1. Imam Shafi rahimahullah said Dar ul Islam is the place where you can practice your religion. Where you can practice your obligatory actions. Where the maqasid of shariah are preserved.
    2. In the lands of the west sometimes you can practice better than in the middle east!
    3. We should try to remove this dar ul harb understanding from our heads.

The second contention: Contention of Hijrah

 

Don’t reject the west, but don’t accept everything you find.

 

I went there and there was a restaurant and I’ve never seen something like this before! $5 and eat anything you like!

It’s called buffet ya sheikh

 

You have to weight the west…so you’ll be just

Sometimes we bring cultural arrogance…we bring things! And it’s the job of the scholars to respect sociology

 

If you make a fatwa without understanding the culture, reality of the people, you are a criminal. This is a CRIME against people. Just to regurgitate fatawa without taking into consideration the realities and situation of these people.

 

“the first man had anger of murderer. Second man had tear of ta’ib (repenter)”- the answer depended on situation.

We have to admit that we benefit from the west. That doesn’t mean that we are sellouts! But we have to thank the people who helped us

 

That takes us to the concept of hijrah… if we don’t take a move:

 

Shaykh Shinqiti said: stay in America

 

Shaykh Bayyan: stay in America

 

Most people in al Azhar say: may Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala help you present Islam to America

 

NONE of them said: you have to pack your bags and leave

 

There are certain conditions for hijrah. This is not Makkah. If you think you live in Makkah, you don’t understand seerah.

 

You find hardship in protecting your eman.. but you don’t come home to find your wife and children killed. O Allah protect us! Amen

 

This country has so much good mashaAllah… we realize there is a lot of khayr. There’s a lot of things that we don’t agree with. And things that are bad!

 

Shaykh Ta ha- 2 types of fatwa:

 

1 for Ummah

1 for individual

 

You have to be careful the fatawa you read online… it might seem exactly the same, BUT there is some nuance in the fatwa online that does not fit your situation, or vice versa.. you need to ask someone who knows YOUR situation.

 

How can a convert be so hard on his/her own people?

 

You used to be this way! Have mercy on the people!

 

The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam is concerned about the people!

 

If we have this contention: we’re gonna bounce one day, we won’t really have concern about the people.

We’ll perpetually be in that way of thinking…. Akhi, welcome HOME akhi! You ARE home.

We’ll never think substantially about how to benefit the people around us.

We’ll never develop long lasting relationships with nonMuslims.

They might hear and see things, but they’ll never take understanding of Islam from you. They took it from TV. subhanAllah that’s frightening!
