We differ- but I still respect you! June 5, 2007 lecture with Ustadh Suhaib Webb

InshaAllah will post some notes from the Exemplary Muslims lectures conducted at MCA this summer. If you see any mistakes please notify me asap… these were just typed while I was listening and I couldn’t catch everything. but mashaAllah the lectures were really good.

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

Wa salatu wa salam ‘ala Rasul Allah

A watering hole- where you take your animals to drink

Shariah= for the Muslim, spiritual oasis. Where Muslim draws strength from, from these rulings in the laws Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala sent down

Need for human being to be connected with, KNOW ALLAH is more important than food and drink.

That’s why we say the duaa after we eat and drink. After mention the material risq and praise Allah subhanahu w ata’ala, you don’t forget the need you have spiritually to be a Muslim because your need for islam is greater than your need for food and drink.

You are reminded of this mercy from ALLAH subhanahu wa ta’ala.

There were some laws and rules ALLAH subhanahu wa ta’ala didn’t mention anything about them.

Those things that Allah did not talk about, they are rahmatan lakum— MERCY from ALLAH subhanahu wa ta’ala to you.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala left a great deal of possibilities and probabilities to the minds of the scholars, to deal with through ijtihaad.

Through the shariah we have the revelation of ALLAH subhanahu wa ta’ala

Through the fiqh, we have the understanding of the lawyers of the ummah

Shariah is everything ALLAH SUBHANAHU WA TA’ALA sent to HIS PROPHET sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam through the Qur’an and Sunnah

Ijtihad- independent reasoning

Two extremes within the community-

1-      those who wish to associate Islam with a historical epic

a.       “ie- microphones are not from the sunnah of the Prophet sal ALlahu alayhi wa sallam”

b.      The understanding!

2-      on the other end, we have those who want to Americanize Islam. To forget the religion fo Islam and to adopt a foreign way of thinking- wa autohbillah.

a.       They call themselves progressive but WALLAHI they are REGRESSIVE.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala sent Shariah- and that doesn’t change!

But fiqh Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala left to the fuqaha and mujtahideen

90 to 95% of fatwas came from human mind bi’idnillah.

We find this in the hadith of Rasul Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam to Muadh radi Allahu anhu

          by the Qur’an

          then by the Sunnah

and if you don’t find it in the sunnah? Muath radi Allahu anhu said I will make ijtihaad

All praise be to Allah who guided Rasul Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam to what pleases Rasul Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam

Always in fiqh you will find differences.

  Pray Asr in Bani Quraydah

1 group- no, we need to pray asr on time

2- no, we need to stick to the command of Rasul Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam

One group prayed before arrived, one group prayed once they got there.

The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam did not say either was wrong…both were right!

In fiqh, there will be differences. But what we lack today is RESPECT OF DIFFERENCES

Being respectful. Although we might hold a position in our heart, as long as it does not go outside of the orthodoxy of our religion, we should differ with respect.

“I don’t agree with you, but I honor you.” Say this in Al Azhar.

I honor, respect, and will listen to what you have to say.

wa Allahu ta’ala ‘alam
