1.     Da’wah

a.      Few contentions:

                                                              i.      some said da’wah is fard al kifayah

                                                           ii.      others said da’wah is fard al ayn

                                                       iii.       We are the Mus’ab ibn Umayr radi Allahu anhu for this country

b.     We should have 2 objectives when we talk about dawah:

                                                              i.       Not that we are going to convert the entire world to Islam. This is not gonna happen; there will always be people who will not believe. For every Prophet, ALLAH subhanahu wa ta’ala will always have enemies.

                                                           ii.      If you don’t have knowledge about something, would assume bad of it.

                                                       iii.      We have a big responsibility. This is not the risalah of the Muslims. This is the risalah of ALLAH ‘Azza wa Jal

                                                        iv.      As Allah bestowed Musa to be a prophet, HE bestowed the Muslims to continue the job of the prophets

2.     Means of fulfilling dawah

a.      If these are fulfilled, they would have the right to be called a DA’IYA

b.     “Say thou: “This is my way: I do invite unto God,- on evidence clear as the seeing with one’s eyes,- I and whoever follows me. Glory to God! and never will I join gods with God!” Surah Yusuf, 108

                                                              i.      Baseera—knowledge

1.     I and whoever follows me- dawah must be made in a group

                                                          ii.      Wa SubhanAllah- Rabaniyya—da’iya has ethics, some connection to ALLAH. He is not harsh. He has this relationship with Allah ‘Azza wa Jal

                                                         iii.      Wa ma ana minal mushrikeen- da’iya is not like other people. Has different qualities, behaviors, sifat, that distinguish me as a da’iya. When see me, thinks: this person is of fidelity, noble person.

                                                         iv.      Other 3 mentioned in surah Nahl, 125: Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance.

1.     Wisdom

2.     Good preaching

3.     Argue with them in the way that’s better

3.     Embellishing the points

a.      Knowledge: ala baseera— means: to perceive. The ulema said Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala didn’t say: I invite to the way on knowledge. HE subhanahu wa ta’ala said ‘ala baseera.

b.     An nakira- used to show generality. Not ‘ala baseerati, but ‘ala baseera

c.      Ulema said: knowledge means 2 things:

                                                              i.      Knowledge of the place- the da’iya knows their habits, the way they look at life, those things

1.     understanding how the people are.

2.     ie: Imam Suhaib said in a speech in Malaysia: subhanAllah, the first thing we do when person becomes Muslim, we ask him to change his name. then someone told him: in Malaysia, if you don’t change name, will not be buried as Muslim.

a.      You have to know the people! He did not know about this nuance before making the statement.

3.     There was one Imam in the past who would go and spend time with the youth, with the kids, with the men, even with the women and old ladies and would converse with them, speak to them about their lives— and ASK them about their stories. Why? To know the people.

4.     If some of us maintain this exclusive, rigid understanding, we won’t know the people. “yamshoona fil aswaaq”- the Messengers alayhim as salam used to walk in the markets (surah Furqaan).

5.     How do we know the people? Read the newspaper, see the polls

6.     Need to know the religion- don’t need to be ‘aalim. They are going to ask you questions like: Why do you pray? Why do your women cover? Etc.

7.     The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallama used to speak the different dialects of the people. The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallama would wear the clothes that were given to him.

8.     Sometimes we want to implement the culture from another land in this country.

9.     We have to be careful that we don’t push the mubahaat and make them like wajibaat on the people. 70% of the rulings are under ibahah (neither liked or disliked, just mubah)

10.                        If you have good knowledge of the deen, and good knowledge of the people, that knowledge will become like sight: baseerah. Allahu akbar

                                                           ii.      Ana wa those who are with me—must work in the jamaa.

1.     need to have group effort because everyone has shortcomings

2.     the Muslims are like one solid wall: all of us have defects and mistakes. So we NEED to be together to make our dawah strong.

3.     If you have these differences between yourselves, your wind will leave you.

4.     wind has 2 qualities:

a.      it goes in the same direction

b.     if it doesn’t go in the same direction, it will not be as strong

5.     when people go to the Prophet, sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam, sometimes with the same question, he, sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam would answer them differently. Why the answer is changing? The medicine depends on the situation.

6.     The diversity of people- we should respect this, and realize that diversity is rahma minAllah. We should avoid tearing people down and destroying them. It’s easy to destroy people, but it’s hard to build them.

7.     we should learn to work together and use each other’s good qualities to assist the da’wah

                                                       iii.      “wa subhanAllah”à HUMBLE yourself

1.     this just comes in the verse

2.     why? Sometimes we get involved and get intoxicated with who we are, with our ‘mashaAllah amazingness’ of the dawah that ‘we’ do.

3.     do you know who ALLAH is? Do you know that the hellfire is for the proud and the haughty?

4.     but subhanAllah, when the Muslim is working on his soul, on herself, he/she will maintain that baraka, and will not look down on the people

5.     “I will not leave a gathering until I convince myself that I am the worst one in front of Allah and need the most help from Allah”

6.     one time a person was walking and he was feeling really arrogant. Then he hit his head. A person told him: this is what happens to the arrogant. They always hit their heads.

7.     what’s the sign that we lost this Rabaniyyah? That we’re harsh with the people. La. You will be easy with the people

8.     you will forgive people.

9.      you will not find lack of ikhlaas in your heart if things don’t go your way. Whatever happens, you’re like the dead body being washed- wherever Allah’s Plan takes you, you’re going with it

                                                         iv.      the one involved with da’wah should be different with the people.

1.     Not different with dress.

2.     not to please them, but for the pleasure of ALLAH subhanahu wa ta’ala

3.     why dress like the nonMuslims?

a.      Not make the people feel far from you

4.     you cannot be more pious than the shareah

5.     extreme means what? To give mubah the ruling of wajib. To give makrooh the ruling of haram. To give haram the ruling of ibaha. To confuse the rulings. This is how people become extreme.
