Do not become the candle that gives light to others but itself remains in darkness.

March 13, 2008

Do not become the candle that gives light to others but itself remains in darkness. Do not follow the desires of your lower self. Should the Lord wish, He himself will pick you out and prompt you to be a source of guidance. He Himself shall endow you with the inner strength to endure the changes of fortune and will instill within you infinite wisdom.

Allah is The Provider

December 14, 2007

Do not seek sustenance from people. God is the real Provider. If He wills a certain person to be the means of your livelihood, do not consider that person to be in control of your destiny. Have faith and be certain in the knowledge that your daily bread does not depend upon any mortal, but upon God who created all.

Ways to Get Closer to Allah

November 1, 2007

[from Sister A.H.]

 1. Reciting the Qur’aan while pondering over its meanings and what is meant by it.

 2. Getting closer to Allah by performing voluntary deeds after completing obligatory deeds. This is as is stated in a Hadeeth Qudsi: “My slave continues getting closer to Me by performing voluntary deeds until I love him.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree]

3. Continual remembrance of Allah under all circumstances, with one’s tongue, heart and actions. The extent of one’s love of Allah is determined by this.

4. Giving precedence to what He loves over what you love when you are overtaken by your desires.

5. The heart being avid of Allah’s Names, and Attributes and the heart roaming in that garden of knowledge.

6. observing Allah’s kindness, goodness and bounties, both hidden and open.

7. And this is the most wonderful, the heart being soft, subdued and meek before Allah.

8. Being alone with Allah during the time when the Lord descends during the last portion of the night while reading His Book and ending that by asking for forgiveness and repenting.

 9. Sitting with the beloved and sincere, benefiting from the most fruitful of their speech. And not to speak unless speaking is more beneficial and you know that it will improve your state and be beneficial to others.

10. Remaining away from every cause that comes between the heart and Allah.

These ten causes take the lovers to the station of true love and bring them to their Beloved.

Easily gaining the pleasure of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala

September 17, 2007

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

as salamu alaykum wa rahmatuAllahi wa barakatahu:

Easily gaining the pleasure of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala

Advice from Imam Suhaib’s on Ramadan [MCA lecture, Sep 15]

2 things that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is pleased with when His slave does them:

1.      saying “La elaha ilAllah”

a.      so say this in abundance

2.      saying “Astaghforillah”

a.      when the slave says ‘astaghforillah’ it’s not like they’re saying, “Yeah! I got it going on till the break of dawn!” it’s like, “Astaghforillah… I’m nothing…how I mess badly I need Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.”

2 things that the slave should ask for

1.      Allahuma adkhelney Jannah

a.      Allahuma, enter me into Jannah

b.      If you don’t know this in Arabic, he said, learn it. Alhamdullilah we all already know “Jannah.”

c.       Ustadh Suhaib gave advice that we should not ask this for ourselves only, but we should ask this in the plural. Why? Because…

d.      The Prophet, sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam, said: ‘There is no believing servant who supplicates for his brother in his absence where the angels do not say, ‘the same be for you.’ [Muslim]

e.      If you make this duaa for everyone in the ummah, and let’s say there are 1.2 billion Muslims, imagine 1.2 billion angels  being appointed for you. Allah’s Mercy is subhanAllah unbelievable.

f.       Therefore, one should ask: Allahuma adkhelna Jannah– Allahuma, enter us into Jannah!

2.      ask to be saved from the hellfire

Also, let us not lose out on these easy to do good deeds:

a.      Seeking forgiveness for all of the Muslims. The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, “Whoever seeks forgiveness for believing men and believing woman, Allah will write for him a good deed for each believing man and believing woman.” [at-Tabarani.]

b.      The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, “‘Whoever says subhanAllah wa bi hamdih (praise and glory be to Allah) 100 times, morning and evening, his sins will be erased even if they are like the foam on the sea.” Bukhari, 6042; Muslim 2691

c.      If a person says “SubhanAllah” (glory be to Allah) 100 times, a thousand good deeds are recorded for him and a thousand bad deeds are wiped away. Narrated by Muslim 2073

d.      Remember Allah when you go shopping: “Whoever enters a market and says:
‘Laa ilaha illallah wahdahu la shareeka lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu yuhyi wa yumeetu wa huwa hayyun laa yamoot, bi yadihil khair, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shayin qadeer’[there is nothing worthy of worship except Allah, alone without partner, to Him belongs dominion and praise, He causes life and death and He is the Living and does not die. In His Hand is all the good, and He is over all things competent]Allah will write for him/her a million good deeds and erase a million bad deeds and raise him a million levels.” [at-Tirmidhi, classed as hasan by al-Albani]

Al Akhira- lecture with Ustadh Suhaib Webb Ramadan 2006

August 12, 2007

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

SubhanAllah last Ramadan the youth had this intense 4 hour lecture with Ustadh Suhaib Webb about the akhira. He took us from when the soul departs through the akhira… he discussed some major and minor signs of the Day of Judgment… subhanAllah it was intense. People- our youth- were crying, freaking out… Allah… the reality, this reality, is crazy scary.

Here are some notes I found recently..

– Imam Ibnul Qayyim rahimahullah: Every breath you breathe, make it for ALLAH subhanahu wa ta’ala.

-What type of friend would take the soul of a friend? The reply: what type of friend wouldn’t want to MEET his FRIEND (subhanahu wa ta’ala)?

– Believer will experience severe pain at his death. Any sins not forgiven for, paoins of death help wipe them out.

– Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is The Most Just: the unbeliever will have a wretched hereafter, so for them, death is easy.

– The believer will go through so much pain, and then given mercy tidings from the angels.

Your eman, the Qur’an, the tahajud [the rakats prayed in the night] will be a noor in your grave and will fight for you against the punishment of the grave.

May Allah protect us from His punishment!

10 ways to develop love for Allah ‘Azza wa Jal- Ibnul Qayyim

August 12, 2007

Imam Ibnul Qayyim rahimahullah gave 10 reasons which cause the mahabah [love of Allah] to develop:

1- Reciting the Qur’an, reflecting upon it and understanding its meanings.

2- Drawing closer to Allah through the performance of optional deeds, after fulfilling the obligatory deeds.

3- Being continuous in dhikr -remembrance of Allah- in all circumstances- with the tough, the herat, and the limbs. The more constant the dhikr, the more mahabah intensifies.

4. Giving precedence to what Allah loves- when being overcome with desires- over what one personally loves and desires.

5- Causing the heart to contemplate over the Names and Attributes of Allah. Being a witness to what they necessitate and causing the heart to be enlightened in the garden of this realization.

6- Witnessing the blessing and the favors of Allah; the apparent and the hidden

7- Subding the heart and humbling it ebfore Allah, causing it to be in awe of Him

8- Being in seclusion during the time inw hich Allah descends to hte lowest Heaven; reciting the Qur’an, and finishing this recitation with seeking Allah’s forgiveness and sincerely repenting to Him.

9- Sitting in the gatherings of the sincere and true lovers of Allah; reaping the benefits of theri teachings, and ot speaking except when you know there is benefit in doing so that such speech will increase you in good and benefit others as well.

10- Keeping clear from all those matters which will cause the heart to distance itself from Allah- the Mighty and Majestic.

Let your sin get a beat down with Allah’s Mercy

July 30, 2007

Sometimes we mess up [big time]… but nothing is too great for Allaah to forgive.

As Ustadh Suhaib Webb mentioned in one of his lectures–

let your sin get a beat down with Allaah’s Mercy.

From Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said, “I heard the messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, saying, ‘Allah, exalted is He, says, “Son of Adam, as long as you call on Me and hope in Me, I will forgive you whatever comes from you and I shall not mind. Son of Adam, even if your wrong actions were to reach the clouds of the sky and then you were to seek forgiveness of Me I would forgive you. Son of Adam, even if you were to come to Me with nearly the earth in wrong actions and then later you were to meet Me, not associating anything with Me, then I would definitely bring you nearly as much as it in forgiveness.” Related by at-Tirmidhi.

The Prophet, salAllahu ‘alayhe wa sallam taught us:

‘Whoever says:

Dua in Arabic

Astaghferollahelath e la elaha illa howal Hayyol Qayyomo wa otobo elayhe

‘I seek Allaah’s forgiveness, besides whom, none has the right to be worshipped except He, The Ever Living, The Self-Subsisting and Supporter of all, I turn to Him in repentance.’

…Allaah would forgive him even if he was one who fled during the advance of an army.’

Sayyidul Istighfar- The Best way of asking Allah for forgiveness

July 30, 2007

On the authority of Shaddad ibn Aws, may Allah be pleased with him, the Prophet, Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Aalihi Wa Sallam, said, “The chief of prayers for forgiveness is:

Allahumma anta rabbee la ilaha illa ant, khalaqtanee wa-ana AAabduk, wa-ana AAala AAahdika wawaAAdika mas-tataAAt, aAAoothu bika min sharri ma sanaAAt, aboo-o laka biniAAmatika AAalay, wa-aboo-o bithanbee, faghfir lee fa-innahu la yaghfiruth-thunooba illa ant.

‘O Allaah, You are my Lord, none has the right to be worshipped except You, You created me and I am You servant and I abide to Your covenant and promise as best I can, I take refuge in You from the evil of which I committed. I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for verily none can forgive sin except You.’

The Prophet, Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Aalihi Wa Sallam, added, “If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it and dies before the morning he will be from the people of Paradise.”

Seeking forgiveness=door to accepted prayers

July 30, 2007

Imam Ahmed, may God be pleased with him, once was traveling and needed to stay somewhere overnight. When he went to the masjid, the guard (not recognizing Imam Ahmed) denied him entrance. Imam Ahmed tried numerous times, but the guard did not accept his requests. Frustrated, Imam Ahmed resolved to spend the night int he masjid yard. The guard became furious and dragged him away, despite the old age and frailty of Imam Ahmed. A baker, whose shop was nearby, watched this scene and took pity on Imam Ahmed. He invited the Imam to stay with him for the night. While there, Imam Ahmed noticed that the baker continually made istighfar (asking for Allah’s forgiveness) while working, and in the mroning, the Imam eagerly asked his host about the latter’s continual seeking of forgiveness. The baker said it had become like second nature, and Imam Ahmed then asked whether the man had experienced any reward from this practice.

The baker answered, “By Allah! No duaa (supplication to God) I made except that it was answered but one.” “And what is that duaa?” asked Imam Ahmed. “To be able to see the famed Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal!”

Imam Ahmed interjected, “I am Ahmed ibn Hanbal!”

He then went on to add:

“By Allah! I was dragged to your place so that you can have your duaa/wish come true.”

– Summarized from Al Jumuah magazine, vol 19, issue 7.

SubhanAllah… Allah dragged Imam Ahmed to the house of the baker to answer his duaa. We needa start making istighfar..
